This is part 1 of a series where I’ll be testing subscription boxes and reporting my findings. Up first: Frank and Oak, for women’s clothing. Let the experiments begin!

Frank and Oak focuses on ethically made, eco-friendly clothing. Their subscription box is a bit of a middle ground between online shopping and subscription boxes. You can buy clothing directly from their website, or you can sign up for their monthly subscription box and get 20% off prices. You get charged a $25 styling fee if you send everything back. And you can choose to skip a month anytime you want.

You start by putting in your sizes and style preferences.

Your stylist (let’s be honest–probably just an algorithm in this case) puts together a box for you. Frank and Oak then sends you a preview of your box with options to swap items in or out.

My box preview and swap options featured a shocking amount of black, gray and white clothing, despite my broad color preferences (as seen above). The lack of variety was honestly kind of strange. I was offered three different white button up shirts. Hmmmmm. I ended up swapping out two of the three pieces they suggested for me.

A downside of Frank and Oak is that you have to pay in full for your items at the time of shipping. These pieces ran $45 for the top and $80 and $110 for the pants.

And…nothing fit. The two pairs of pants it were not a good fit on me. The shirt was small, but would have been fine one size up. Frank and Oak does run small from regular sizing. You’ll want to order a size up.

I’m returning the whole box…and waiting for my refund. My styling fee was waived as a first time customer.

Overall, Frank and Oak seems to have some good basics pieces, and I like their focus on ethically made and eco-friendly clothing. I plan to get another box next month to see if their styling and sizing can be improved.
